We are volunteers committed to defending our community's environment and quality of life. We develop innovative programs to raise awareness and protect our neighbors from environmental harm.  We insist that our corporate neighbors be environmentally responsible and expect that our community is made aware of projects that affect our well-being.  Our goal is to have our residents, corporate neighbors, government representatives, and public agencies share our commitment to protecting the environment and the health of our community.

Quemetco (Ecobat), a lead smelter and hazardous waste generator located in the City of Industry, has been operating since 1959 and is now surrounded by residential areas like Hacienda Heights, Avocado Heights, North Whittier, and La Puente, with around 140,000 mostly Latina/o residents. Some homes in Hacienda Heights are as close as 400 feet from the facility. Lead waste from all over the world now comes to Quemetco.

Quemetco has a long history of permit violations and toxic releases into our communities. More recently, the company attempted to intimidate CAC into silence after we spoke about our health concerns at a public hearing. All of this confirms—once and for all—that this facility has no business in our residential community. DENY THE PERMIT! Ya basta! #SayNoToQuemetco!

Our communities deserve better. Ecobat (formerly Quemetco) is a hazardous waste facility in LA’s City of Industry that has been releasing lead and arsenic into the environment for years. Residents near the facility have reported health issues, including cancer and lead contamination, attributed to the plant’s operations. The facility has a long history of regulatory violations and has accrued nearly $3 million in penalties since 2020. Despite installing pollution control equipment, concerns about the facility’s impact on public health persist. Community members, supported by the Clean Air Coalition, are advocating for the denial of Ecobat’s permit renewal and the closure of the facility. They argue that the company’s past operations and ongoing violations make it unfit to continue operating in their neighborhood. Regulators have found numerous serious violations at the facility, including cracks in hazardous waste storage areas and inadequate environmental monitoring. While Ecobat claims these are mostly technical issues, community advocates and some regulators view them as significant concerns. It’s time to end the cycle. Deny the permit. One place to start: methane gas power plants. Our new report identifies nine gas plants all at risk of violating national air quality standards, with LA’s own Walnut Creek Energy Park as the most harmful of the bunch. This new report details the harms and explains what we can do to clean up our air. On Saturday, September 14, 2024, concerned residents living near Quemetco expressed their concerns, sorrow, and frustration with regulatory agencies that are meant to protect us. Yet, despite the somber tone of many residents’ testimonies due to experiencing loss to rare forms of cancers and serious illnesses; there was still an aura of empowerment and unity amongst the residents. That is because you can’t put a price on the trauma many neighbors have endured living near a toxic battery smelter by losing nephews, sons, sisters, spouses, or pets. Coalition members are not paid to show up. This is not a gimmick or game for us. This is our reality and these are our real lives.
